Assistant Stage Manager (Book Cover)
Salary
£1,150 per week for performances (£1,100 per week for rehearsals)

Contract Dates
6 July – 28 September 2026 (exact dates TBC)
Rehearsals 6 July – 26 July 2026, Tech 24 – 30 July 2026
Show schedule
Performances are 6 days per week, typically Tuesday – Sunday. The performance schedule during previews varies and shall be confirmed at point of contract.
Holiday
As per the SOLT/Equity Agreement (28 days per full calendar year)

Personal attributes
We are looking for applicants with previous Assistant Stage Management and calling experience. The role requires someone who can work in a highly pressured environment, effectively prioritise and be an excellent team player. Knowledge and experience of the working practices of a West End production is highly desirable.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assisting the production and Stage Management teams with the running of rehearsals and performances, performing tracks and conducting maintenance;
- Ensuring that stage and rehearsal environments are set-up and maintained as required with appropriate set, props, mark-ups and other effects as necessary;
- Assisting the Stage Management and creative teams with rehearsal requirements and requests;
- Performing ASM plots as directed by the Stage Manager, which may include some onstage cues in costume;
- Learning and keeping up-to-date with “the book”, and calling the show as Book Cover when required;
- Deputising for the DSM, including calling the show, as required;
- Learning other plots within the department and providing absence cover for other members of the department as necessary;
- Training and supervising new deps as required;
- Recognising where maintenance work needs to be carried out and reporting this to the Stage Manager;
- Maintaining props and carrying out repairs as required;
- Ensuring all Stage Management equipment and areas are kept in a tidy and secure manner;
- Working collaboratively with all other departments including the theatre technical team in order to ensure the smooth running of the production;
- Any other reasonable duty that would normally fall within the remit of an ASM or Book Cover based on industry norms and practice.
Person Specification
- Demonstrable professional experience as an ASM, including Book Cover, on a production of a similar scale on tour or in the West End;
- Experience of performer flying;
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with excellent attention to detail;
- The ability to handle confidential information with discretion;
- A calm and proactive approach to technical troubleshooting;
- An understanding of comic timing;
- The ability to work well with actors and creative teams;
- The ability to work under pressure and effectively prioritise;
- Knowledge of SOLT/Equity union agreements;
- Awareness of current Health & Safety legislation including COSHH.
